UAE VAT Guidance and Transaction Reviews

Understand your VAT questions

Practical guidance from Dr. Ahmad Helwani on VAT questions, transaction reviews and the information needed for compliance.

Value Added Tax is a tax on consumption across the supply chain. The Federal Tax Authority’s VAT Topics provides an official starting point for understanding VAT, registration and returns. A business-specific question also needs the facts and supporting documents behind the transaction.

Make sense of your VAT question

I help you work through VAT questions by looking at the business activity, the transactions involved and the information available. This can include reviewing a transaction and identifying which records are needed to understand its VAT treatment.

For example, a question about an invoice is easier to assess alongside the contract, the goods or services supplied and the parties involved. A clear explanation of the transaction helps identify the points that need further review and the relevant official guidance.

Prepare the information for review

Start with the records relevant to your question:

  • A short description of your business and the transaction.
  • Your VAT registration status and relevant tax period, if applicable.
  • The invoice, credit note or other document you want to discuss.
  • Related contracts, purchase orders and payment records, where available.
  • Details of the supplier, customer and countries involved.
  • Any relevant FTA correspondence or previous explanation of the issue.

The information needed varies by transaction. The FTA’s VAT learning resources cover topics including invoices, credit notes, registration and returns.

Common questions

Can you review a specific transaction?
Yes. Describe the transaction and the VAT question, then gather the supporting records so the review can address the relevant facts.

What if I am unsure whether VAT registration is relevant?
Include your business activity, registration status and available sales information in your enquiry. The FTA’s VAT Topics page links to official registration guidance.

Do I need every document before making contact?
No. Start with a clear description of the issue and explain which records are available. We can identify what additional information is needed.

Discuss your VAT question

Use the enquiry form to describe your VAT question or transaction. Mention the relevant period and any approaching deadline so your enquiry starts with the right context.
